Who is the Walkabout Woman?
The Walkabout Woman is Betsy Lewis, a social media consultant by day and creative person (artist, writer, and idea–generator) by night. However, “the walkabout woman” could be any woman who has decided to take the courageous first step toward living her longings.
At 56 years of age I have been a daughter, wife, mother and am now a grandmother. In those roles I’ve experienced many joys and some tragedies.
A health crisis brought me face to face with my own mortality. Values rearranged themselves, trivial things fell away and relationships took center stage. I came to know that I had mattered, and felt grateful to have even had “a life”. And that was enough.
And then the worst didn’t happen!
I survived and got another chance.
It was a reality check – a gift really – and I knew I wanted to live the rest of my life differently. Ideas and plans I had toyed with in the past now became priorities.
A friend began what she called a “walkabout.” She left home for a time, wandering with an openness to living something yet to be defined. I was unfamiliar with the word “walkabout.” (Was it one word or two; a noun or a verb?) Regardless, I was captivated by the word and the idea.
The word “walkabout” began to take the shape of my own longing for freedom.
I wanted freedom to live more intuitively, to put my own needs first, to shed material things that had once defined me, to be creative, and to see the world. And finally, I wanted freedom from the emotional pain that haunted me. Ten years post divorce, I was still wrestling unproductively with the relationship.
The details of my walkabout are sketchy. And that’s the way I want it. When I talk to other women about my walkabout, their faces change before my eyes and I can literally see the ideas rushing into consciousness.
And then they tell me what they have always longed to do or be.
This moved me deeply and part of my personal walkabout became helping women find a way to bring these yearnings to life. I hope someday to create a Walkabout Woman Project — a place where women from around the world can virtually gather to receive support and inspiration as they take their own courageous first steps toward living their longings.
And this is where my walkabout story begins . . . .
